In the previous article we discussed 9 SEO tips to appear on the first page of Google. This time we will discuss other interesting SEO tips, namely how to optimize and update old-school articles on the website.

Do not delete old content – it must be updated

There are several things you should pay attention to when you want Old School Article Optimization and Update. You may be used to creating new content every day. But have you noticed that creating a new article takes more time? Of course, compared to opening up old school content and updating it. This is much more effective, my friend. You can do this by modifying the date, changing the title, inserting the latest trending material, latest download link, and latest relevant keywords.

1. Don’t change the URL

If you have old content ranking high on Google, don’t try to change the URL! Because if the URL of old content changes, Google will consider it as new content has no ranking, really sadistic. However, it’s different if your old school content isn’t performing well. Then you can update the old content with a new URL that is more SEO friendly.

For example: https://www.website.com/article-jadul-games-terbaik-2017, since 2017 is no longer updated, you can change 2017 to 2018. Of course, without changing other URL structures. So the result is https://www.website.com/article-jadul-games-terbaik-2018

2. Update relevant keywords

After analyzing the URL, now is the time to optimize and update old content keywords. Who knows, your old content may no longer be relevant to current Google searches. For this reason, you can try doing keyword research with a similar context to Google AdWords .

For example: Your old content targets keywords “place to download free music 2007” Of course, these keywords are not relevant. Now is the age of smartphones. I also saw that the number of Internet users who downloaded music from the site decreased. Most music lovers now stream directly from YouTube or apps (Spotify, Joox or iTunes). You should update the keyword to become “free music download app” or “download music from YouTube”

3. Content and quality optimization

Review old content before and after updating keywords. If there’s still too much, it’s your job to mix the content again. For example, changing the H1 heading, rewriting paragraph by paragraph with more concise and SEO-friendly sentences.

For example: You have the old school content “Free Android Games 2017”, of course all this content has expired this year. So now you need to start looking for the latest games of 2018, rearrange the games list and correct the phrase from 2017 to 2018.

What else needs to be optimized and updated?

  1. Check internal and external links:
If you had the article about Free Games for Android 2017 that was optimized for quality. So now you need to update the download link and referral link on that page. Do not share inactive internal or external URLs (URL 404).
  2. Latest Image Update:
As I wrote, you can beautify the appearance of old articles by updating all the images in them. Or maybe you give a design that is more interesting and pop, or give an image that is simpler and clearer.
  3. Repromote content:
There are four important things you can do when repromoting. First make sure that the old article you updated is on the main page of the site and also display it in the sidebar if necessary. Second , you must provide a footnote indicating that an update has occurred on the page. So visitors know that old school articles are still being updated today. Third , changed the release date. If your post date was previously in 2017, you can repost and update the date to be the most up-to-date. Fourth , reach out and re-promote your content.

How to optimize and update old articles on a website

How long will optimization affect SEO?

In fact, it is difficult for me to say for sure, but according to many SEO experts and according to my personal experience. After optimizing old articles, the effect on Google searches will occur 1 to 6 months after the update. It depends on the number of SEO competitors and the quality of your content. So don’t give up ok!

Optimizing and updating old website articles is very easy!

In fact, there are still many things we can do to update old website content so that it continues to exist and generate organic users from Google searches. But remember, you need to keep updating the latest content, don’t stop because you are busy dealing with old content.
